Spiritual Adultery

Posted by Steven G.

In reference to James 4:1-10

"It is important to understand the core principle of this passage, which is found in verse 4. When James says,"You adulterous people," he is not changing the subject. He is explaining why we all struggle with anger. Here is the central principle of this passage: Human conflict is rooted in spiritual adultery. My problem is not sinful people or difficult situations. My problem is that I give the love that belongs to God to someone or something else. My problem is idolatry."

"Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom." Does this mean that I should be wretched and mourn and weep when I love myself more than God? I believe it does. Funny, I haven't seen any books titled Be Wretched and Mourn and Weep, but this is what Nehemiah did - "As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven." Nehemiah 1:4
