I took a little time for escape this afternoon and slipped off to the lake with Eli for a little I-know-we-won't-catch-anything-but-I-need-a-break time. I took Eli with me because he has recently become interested in fishing. Before about two weeks ago Eli's fishing experience consisted of worms, bobbers and cane poles. He is now fishing with the same tackle that I use and is becoming very efficient.
After about 30 minutes without a bite I lapsed into my normal state. My mind filled with questions like:
Is it OK to ask God to let us catch fish?
How selfish.
Does God really care if we catch fish?
In other words is He soveriegn and good?
Or is he only soveriegn in the big stuff?
Why do I fish?
Probably so I can catch a fish and then brag to my friends and then feel good about myself.`
Is God gone fishing himself (comes under Diesm)
Isn't there something about God and second causes that I can't remember from seminary? I need to dust off that book.
When it's all said and done, I repent of being Biblically illiterate, and ask God for a good time and lots of fish.
I know you can see what's coming. Eli caught a huge 1 1/2 to 2 lb bass. (I caught two brim.)
God is good. God is soveriegn. I imagine that Jesus really liked fishing
I think the fish winked at me when I let him go.

Great thought! That would explain all the trips we take and catch NOTHING!

I know a four-year-old who would love to spend time with his uncle. He has a brand new fishing pole.
